Premier League leaders Arsenal and second placed Liverpool, who were tied on points ahead of the weekend both fell to astonishing losses just hours apart from each other to gift Manchester City first place at the top of the league with just six games left to play.

Jurgen Klopp's Red's aiming for their first title in four years and second since 1990, in what is also the German's final season in charge of the club after nine successful years, were beaten 1-0 at home by a Crystal Palace side dwelling in the bottom half of the table, who hadn't won in 11 away games.

That result left the door open to Arsenal to go a point clear at the top of the Premier League with a home win over Aston Villa, with the Gunners having won 10 of their previous 11 matches and all of their last six league games on their home patch.

Mikel Arteta's side were also on the receiving end of a surprise loss, falling 2-0 to an Aston Villa side fighting for their Champions League place next season, conceding twice late on as their title ambitions took a monumental blow.

Sunday's drama means Manchester City sit two points clear atop the Premier League table, on track to become the first club in history to win four consecutive English league titles, and win back-to-back European trebles after their 5-1 win over Luton on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola's side jumped from 5/4 to 2/5 favourites with bet365 to win the Premier League following yesterday's action, with Arsenal now back at 4/1 and Liverpool 6/1.

  • Arsenal - 4/1
  • Liverpool - 6/1

In the Championship, what was a three horse race for the second tier title has now become a four horse race after none of Leicester, Leeds nor Ipswich were able to pick up a win between across last week's midweek and weekend action.

Title favourites Leicester lost consecutive away games against Millwall and Plymouth, both of whom were firmly in the relegation battle at the time of their matches, which has seen Enzo Maresca's side lose hold of top spot in the race for promotion.

The Foxes are now second in the table, just a point behind Ipswich and a point ahead of Leeds, though do possess a game in hand over the other sides in the top three which is the reason they remain odds on favourites at 1/2.

Ipswich could only pick up two draws last week against Watford and Middlesbrough which has taken the top of the league by a solitary point but will still be seen as a huge opportunity missed having missed out on building a healthy lead at the top of the pile.

Kieran McKenna's side are 7/2 to win the title, ahead of Leeds who are 6/1 after only managing a draw against Sunderland before losing 1-0 at home to a Blackburn side in relegation trouble after being thrashed 5-0 by mid-table Bristol City in the week.

Daniel Farke's side had previously gone unbeaten at home in all competitions this season, and now find themselves a point off the top two, having played a game more than second-placed Leicester, with just three matches of the season to play.

The final day of the season sees Leeds take on a Southampton side who, with back-to-back victories last week, have forced themselves back in the automatic promotion places, with the Saints now six points behind Leeds with two games in hand.

Russell Martin's side got the better of Coventry and Watford, the latter of which via a 98th minute winner, that leaves them well within reach of a potential surprise attack on the top two.

The Hampshire side still have both Leicester and Leeds to play, so face the toughest run in of the four, and are thus priced at 40/1 to win the Championship title.

bet365's Championship title winning odds:

  • Leicester - 1/2
  • Ipswich - 7/2
  • Leeds - 6/1
  • Southampton - 40/1

bet365’s Steve Freeth commented; “We finished in the red in the Grand National and the Masters, but were anything but on the football where in the space of a few hours we saw 1/5 Liverpool and 1/4 Arsenal falter. Throw in 2/11 Rangers and you get a memorable Sunday for layers.

“So often we’ve seen Liverpool win from behind to break bookmakers’ hearts but it’s been a miserable few days at fortress Anfield with two defeats to nil and their failure at 1/5 more than made up for losses incurred six miles away a day earlier.

“That result, quickly followed by the one at the Emirates had Manchester City ending the day as the big winners having shortened from 5/4 into 2/5 in the title race despite not kicking a ball.”
