Ipswich v Southampton preview

Ipswich head into the Easter weekend have won seven of their last eight matches in the Championship, which has seen them re-mount their title charge after a big wobble around the Christmas and New Year period following their breathtaking start to the season.

Conor McKenna's side are seeking to record back to back promotions having been playing League One football only last year, and bid to reach the promised land of the Premier League next season, in what would be their first top flight campaign since 2002.

Just one point separates the top three sides in the Championship heading into the weekend, with Ipswich currently occupying third place in the promotion race.

Only Leeds, the current league leaders, have accrued more second tier points this season at their home ground than the Tractor Boys have at Portman Road, with the Suffolk side having on lost once on home turf in the league so far this campaign, which came way back in August.

Southampton saw their hopes of automatic promotion derailed in the month of February with Russell Martin's side's long 25-match unbeaten run coming to an abrupt end with a run of three defeats in their last four matches.

Back to back defeats before last week's international break did get the Saints back on track, but the Hampshire side could be destined for the play-offs with the gap between themselves and the automatic promotion places now at nine points.

One thing in their favour though is their games in hand, with Southampton having played two matches fewer than their opponents on Easter Monday, with an eight point deficit, meaning a win in Suffolk would put a third-place finish in their hands.

Only Leicester have picked up more points on the road than Southampton this season, who have lost only once on the road in the league since September.

Ipswich won the previous meeting between the two sides, ending a run of eight winless matches against the Saints, who have won on each of their last three visits to Portman Road.

📝 Ipswich v Southampton betting tips

A tight contest is expected on Easter Monday between the third and fourth placed teams in the Championship, but Ipswich's recent form and home record should take them over the line, leaving Betfed's offer of 16/5 on a home win and both teams to score looking tempting.
