McGavin Back With Blues
Monday, 22nd Mar 2021 20:40

TWTD understands Blues midfielder Brett McGavin has returned to Town from his loan side Ayr United.

McGavin, 21, joined the Honest Men in January but has made only one 12-minute sub appearance since his move to Somerset Park, who recently sacked manager Mark Kerr and replaced him with former Crystal Palace and Leeds midfielder David Hopkin.

Academy product McGavin, who won't be able to feature for the Blues' senior side again this season, has made 10 starts and one sub appearance for the Town first team.

Blues defender Corrie Ndaba moved to Ayr prior to McGavin but has made nine starts for the Scottish Championship's seventh-placed side.

Wonder if he's able to play if needed, or if his season is over?

"has made none starts" - do you mean nine? Accoring to WIkipedia it's ten.

PC taking a look to decide his future?

He should be a squad player, like many of our other youth products. No point filling the squad with bang average journeymen who ony make a handful of appearances. Anyone we buy/get on a free (with a signing on fee, so not entirely free), needs to be a 1st team player, better than anything we've got now.
Keeping working at it, Brett!

I like Brett, thought he did well during a difficult period for us. Disappointed he was taken on loan and then barely had a sniff. Needs to be back here for pre season to strengthen, get match fit and then given a chance..

Paul Cook having a look at another youngster 👍. I like what's happening at this Club under PC. He's preparing for next season - whatever division we are in .

AlexGreen: "Academy product McGavin, who won't be able to feature for the Blues' senior side again this season." Presumably, there is some rule about this.

Steve_ITFC Sweden I'm guessing that the part about him not being able to play again this season is a reference to the salary cap which is still in force for the rest of the season. Presumably we have our full budget and, as he is over 21, he would count towards it.

It's a bit worrying that he couldn't get a regular game at Ayr United, but like a lot of young players at the club they are over hyped and patronised on here, and hopefully if Cook' brings in some better quality players he will be shifted further down the order.

This lad is a much better option than Skuse & should never have been sent out on loan

Guys, Brett is 21 ! Not some kid and unbelievably he has not lost 2-3 seasons to injury.

If he was good enough he would have broken through by now, even though he has played OK on occasions when trusted by PL. Not getting into the Ayr side must be a wake up call both to the player and those who rate our youth products so highly. I sincerely hope that our new Management has the ability to see through the big talk and work out which ones of our youth set-up are able to play professional football, versus what they do on the training ground at Playford Rd.....there is a difference and physicality is clearly one. Downes had to leave the Club to realise that, but is now drifting back into ITFC limpness again.

You cannot win anything with kids is actually true (Man U just prove the exception) and we need some kids to man-up or move on, as tough as that is to say.

I think McGavin did OK in his few Town appearances & could be a useful holding midfield player, certainly more of a natural in a defensive 2 than Teddy Bishop. Obviously Cook probably won't have seen him play & hope he gets a chance this season so that Cook can decide if he's worth keeping.

I also think McG looked OK in his performances for Town. Obviously, he needs to develop, but he's at a stage where he could do that quite quickly (cf. Downes). McG is one of our (ex-)yoofs who certainly deserves a chance. After that, it's up to him to take it.

ok not good enough. If he's struggling to get a game at Ayr. Then it doesn't look promising in any shape or form. Another mentality or attitude issue maybe. We should be looking at the player/s keeping our loaned player/s out of the loaned to team maybe

Downes and Wolfenden proved they were good enough when out on loan . Since then we haven't really produced any thing of any note. If by a miracle we did get promoted many of our youngsters would be even further down the pecking order.

The reason he cant play for the 1st team this season is as hes actually classed as still being on loan for the rest of the season.

Ayr fan here, I think the lad just came to us at the wrong time, Mark Kerr was on the way out after a run of bad results and McGavin's arrival fell just before he left. Then there was a gap before Hopkin came in, who obviously had his own ideas and got the lad Barjonas from Rangers. However, Corrie Ndaba has done very well for us, does the simple things well, good player

Like a lot of players at Ipswich he's getting rave reports on here. He didn't do it at Ayr United time to start delivering especially bearing in mind he's twenty one years old and no longer classed as a real youngster.

I really rate McGavin and feel he could become a great player under the right manager in the right system.
