Robbie Fowler has been appointed head coach of the A'League's Brisbane Roar, in what is the Liverpool legend's first major foray into management.

The former striker, who played in Australia towards the end of his career, has agreed to a two-year contract with the Queensland club from the start of the 2019 season.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge and am determined to bring success to a club that has such a proud history in the Hyundai A-League," Fowler said in a statement on the club's website.

His assistant will be Tony Grant, a former midfielder who played for Everton, Manchester City and Burnley.

Fowler played for North Queensland Fury before its financial collapse in 2010. He then moved to Perth Glory for a season before moving to Muangthong United in Thailand, where he became player-head coach.

The 44-year-old, who has coached at Liverpool's academy, has been linked to managerial vacancies at several clubs over the years, most notably Leeds United.

"I'm so excited. It's something I've wanted for a long time," Fowler told the Sydney Morning Herald. "Everyone will mention the experience and that I've not got it, but I've done everything the right way. I've got every single badge that there is. To actually get a job with a great team is very very rewarding and I'm really proud of myself.

"I always knew if I wanted to become a manager, it had to be the right club and I just feel as though Brisbane is. It's a long way from home but I think the club has got a lot to offer, and I feel like I've got a lot to offer the club as well. For me, it's a great fit."
