With a few weeks remaining, this is already the greatest season in Bayer Leverkusen’s history.

Crowned German champions for the first time in April, Xabi Alonso’s side are through to the DFB-Pokal final and are on the brink of reaching the Europa League showpiece too.

What is more, they are still unbeaten in all competitions. Never mind Leverkusen, this could yet become one of the most impressive seasons ever by any European team.

Sceptics will scoff that Leverkusen have not done anything yet in the Champions League. But the fact they could complete a treble without losing a single game in any tournament would be a feat for the ages, especially as Leverkusen are not exactly a European heavyweight.

Alonso’s team are in pole position to triumph in this tie. A 2-0 victory at the Stadio Olimpico last week means they are odds-on favourites to reach the final at the expense of Roma.

Alonso took a gamble in making numerous changes to his side for Sunday’s Bundesliga clash with Eintracht Frankfurt. Yet a much-changed XI strolled to a 5-1 win on the road. That sums up both their quality and confidence.

Leverkusen have a maximum of five matches remaining this term. In the Bundesliga, only Bochum and Augsburg stand between them and the history books as Leverkusen seek to become the first German side ever to go an entire top-flight campaign undefeated.

In the DFB-Pokal final, second-tier Kaiserslautern are unlikely to be able to halt this juggernaut. And provided Leverkusen see off Roma on Thursday, they will be the favourites to overcome either Marseille or Atalanta in Dublin on May 22.

Roma will feel they can at least cause Leverkusen some problems here. If they were to score the first goal on the night, the BayArena crowd could grow nervous. 

Deep down, though, Daniele De Rossi must know that his team has a mountain to climb.

Bayer Leverkusen delivered the perfect away performance in Rome last week. They had 19 shots compared to eight for their opponents, and crucially two of those attempts ended up in the back of the net.

Leverkusen had less of the ball than Roma and there were times when they had to dig in defensively. But they did that with resolve and organisation, allowing them to depart the Stadio Olimpico with a 2-0 win.

Realistically, Roma need to break the deadlock on Thursday to keep their hopes of progression alive. The concession of the first goal would surely doom De Rossi’s division to defeat.

The maturity of this Leverkusen team means they will be able to manage the match and stay in control. As Roma get more and more desperate, the German champions have the attributes to pick them off on the break.

Given how well their season has gone, Leverkusen’s players must have a huge amount of belief surging through their bodies. They can complete the job in style on Thursday - by beating Roma for a second time.

Alonso has shown throughout this season that he is a smart head coach. He has given Bayer Leverkusen an identity, but his team have a pragmatic side that has helped them go unbeaten for the entire campaign to date.

We should see another example of that on Thursday. With a two-goal aggregate advantage for comfort, Leverkusen will likely look to hold Roma at arm’s length.

De Rossi has given the team he inherited from Jose Mourinho more attacking verve, but Roma are not exactly free-scoring.

The Italian outfit have scored more than one goal in only three of their last 11 encounters in all competitions.

That bodes ill for their chances of overturning a 2-0 deficit. All things considered, this could be a low-scoring match at the BayArena.

Victor Boniface is Bayer Leverkusen’s top scorer with 19 goals in all competitions. Five of those strikes have come in seven Europa League appearances, which means only four players have been more productive in this tournament.

Boniface came off the bench to score a late penalty in Saturday’s 5-1 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt.

Given he only played for 30 minutes at the weekend, the Nigeria international should be reasonably fresh for the visit of Roma.

Thirteen of Boniface’s goals this term have come at the BayArena and he will fancy his chances of increasing that number on Thursday.

Roma will struggle to keep a clean sheet against Leverkusen, especially in a game where they will have to put the ball at risk more than usual.

Boniface will be desperate to reach the 20-goal mark for 2023/24. He might not have to wait too much longer.
