Victor Wembanyama had a rookie campaign for the ages.

The San Antonio Spurs star was named the NBA's Rookie of the Year on Monday, receiving all 99 first-place votes to become just the sixth unanimous Rookie of the Year in the last 40 years.

The 7ft 4in giant arrived in The Association with a level of fanfare not seen since LeBron James in 2003.

Two decades ago, high school hooper James was the heir apparent to Air Jordan and was famously dubbed 'The Chosen One' on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

The 19-year-old was selected No. 1 overall by his hometown Cavaliers and finished the season as the Rookie of the Year, joining Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan as the only players to average better than 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game as rookies.

As far as debut seasons go, it's definitely up there.

Wemby's just happens to be better.

The towering center averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and a league-leading 3.6 blocks per game this season - becoming the youngest player to ever lead the league in blocks.

James, meanwhile, averaged 20.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game in his first NBA season.

Advantage Wemby.

Wemby also became the first rookie in NBA history to average at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three blocks per game, and the first player since Shaquille O'Neal during his MVP season in 1999-2000 to put up such a stat-line.

This season, Wembanyama became just the fourth player, and first rookie, to finish a season with at least 1,500 points, 250 assists and 250 blocked shots.

Nobody had done that since 1993-94 when Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson both had such a season.

He is also the first player to have at least 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks and 100 3-pointers made in a season.

But what's most incredible about Victor's numbers is that he did it playing on limited minutes.

James averaged 39.5 minutes per contest during his rookie season, while Victor only averaged 29.7 minutes per game.

Other than Malcolm Brogdon in 2017, it is the lowest minutes average of any winner of the Rookie of the Year award.

Then there's the defense.

James was certainly no defensive slouch as a rookie, but Wemby has put up Bill Russell-like performances in Year 1.

He is just the second rookie to lead all NBA players in blocks per game in a season, joining Manute Bol who did it in 1985-86.

Wembanyama and Bol are also the only two rookies to lead the NBA in total blocks in a season since blocks were first recorded in the 1973-74 season.

Earlier this year, Wemby became the first rookie since former Spurs big man David Robinson in 1990 to record a 10-block triple-double, finishing with 27 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks against the Toronto Raptors.

He is also one of only three NBA players - alongside Tim Duncan and Robinson - to register 30 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five blocks in a game.

Wemby then became the first player since Olajuwon in 1996 to record at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, 10 blocks and five assists in a game.

Soon after, the 20-year-old became just the 15th player in NBA history (and the youngest ever) to tally a 5x5 stat line.

He had 27 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, five steals and five blocks in just 30 minutes of action in a loss to the Lakers.

The Spurs center also joined Michael Jordan as the only NBA player to ever post consecutive games with at least five blocks and steals.

Simply put, Wemby's defensive numbers this season have been otherworldly.

He's already one of the best rim protectors in the league and was rightly named one of three finalists for Defensive Player of the Year along with Minnesota's Rudy Gobert and Miami's Bam Adebayo.

Although excellent, James was never this defensively dominant this early in his career.

Wemby, meanwhile, could become the first rookie ever to make first team All-Defense later this week.

However, despite his elite production, the Spurs have struggled for wins.

Gregg Popovich's team finished second-to-bottom of the Western Conference with the same record (22-60) as they did the season before.

In James' rookie season, he led his Cavs to a 35-47 record - an 18-game improvement on the previous year, but not enough to make the playoffs.

With that said, there's only so much one player can do, especially when they're only playing 29 minutes a night.

And the Spurs are clearly better with Wemby in their lineup.

They were without him for six games this season and went 0-6, losing by an average of 11.5 points.

There's no denying Wemby has had one of the greatest rookie seasons ever.

Is it the best ever? Perhaps not.

Magic Johnson was an All-Star and had 42 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and three steals in Game 6 of the 1980 NBA Finals to clinch a championship for the Lakers.

He is still the only rookie to win the NBA Finals MVP award.

Kareem-Abdul Jabbar (1969-1970) and Tim Duncan (1997-1998) are also in the conversation for best debut campaign but Wemby stands alone this century.

"One of the greatest NBA seasons ever," said one fan.

"Generational," added another.

Generational is certainly the word that best describes a transcendental talent like Wembanyama.

What's scary for the rest of the league is that he's only going to improve.

He is still years away from reaching his peak.

"Wemby lived up to the hype, and he's only going to get better," one fan said.

“Physically, the work is never going to be done,” Wembanyama said, when speaking about how he can get better.

“I’ve had my plan for months ready for all of my body and we’re going to keep discovering new ways to get better and work on my body. For basketball, there’s a lot I want to work on.”

Wemby has proved he can be a superstar in this league. Now he needs the regular minutes of a starter and some talent around him to really flourish into an all-time great.

If the re-building Spurs manage to put some pieces around Wemby over the next few years then the sky's the limit.

GOAT status? It's entirely possible.
