The Rams booked a place back in the Championship with a win against Carlisle but many football fans were baffled when they lifted a trophy post-game.

It has led to many questions, with one being whether it will be the same for whoever finishes runner-up in the second tier this weekend…

Do Championship runners-up get a trophy?

Yes, whichever team finishes second in the Championship will get a trophy.

Despite the confusion from many supporters, it has been a common theme over the years for the runners-up of each tier of the EFL to receive some silverware.

And either Leeds or Ipswich will be celebrating in that way this weekend with Leicester already finishing top.

Last season, Sheffield United were promoted to the Premier League after finishing behind champions Burnley and they celebrated with a trophy after the game.

However, that caused this same debate at the time with Arsenal legend Paul Merson wondering why it happens.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said jokingly: “What's the trophy for? I got to the final of table tennis at Butlin's, and I didn't get anything.

“I got beat in the final! Why should they get anything? A trophy for second?”

He continued to rant, saying: “It's brilliant going up, but you don't have a trophy for second.

“You don't get a trophy, you get a medal for coming second in the Olympics that you work for for four years.

“They've just come second in the league and they're getting a trophy.”

May fans said similar after Derby’s success in League One last weekend but some quickly realised it has been a common theme for years.

One posted on X, saying: “Happens every year and every year people cry about it.”

Another wrote: “There’s been a promotion trophy for decades.”

“Every club who finished 2nd in League 2, League 1 and Championship get a trophy for being promoted. It’s always been that way,” a third said.

So it will be the same this weekend, with second place to be decided in the Championship on Saturday with games kicking off at 12:30pm.
