Leeds United striker Georginio Rutter’s bold claims came back to bite him as a crushing defeat led to promotion rivals Leicester City booking their return to the Premier League.

The Foxes’ immediate leap back up to the top flight was confirmed on Friday night as Leeds suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers - a result that also meant QPR are now safe from the drop.

It sparked mad celebrations across Leicester, and none more so than in the house of manager Enzo Maresca, who appeared to invite the whole team to his gaff to watch the game - with the boss and his players then celebrating long into the night as automatic promotion was secured without even being on the pitch.

But while there were scenes of jubilation across the city, Foxes fans still found time to rub it in the faces of Leeds and their supporters by digging up an interview from Rutter earlier in the season.

The Yorkshire side had made a statement in February by beating the league leaders 3-1 at Elland Road - and in thrilling fashion, coming back from an early goal down to score three in the last ten minutes - to close the gap at the top to six points.

Rutter then claimed in a post-match interview that Leeds were ‘the best’ team in the league, telling Sky Sports: "We are the best team I think. You know, today, I can't describe, I don't have words.

"I am tired, but we are Leeds, you know that. You know, it's not finished, you have to be focused for the next game, but today you have to enjoy a bit and that's it."

Leicester - who have led the table for most of the season - did threaten to throw it all away late in the campaign, too, with a late push from Southampton making things really interesting as they joined Leeds and Ipswich in their push for a top-two spot.

But all their challenges have faded in recent weeks, with Leeds, Ipswich and Southampton going on a run of dropping points in recent weeks which has seen Leicester run clear.

And the Foxes faithful made sure Leeds fans were brought back down to earth with a bang as they resurfaced the Rutter interview and spread it all over social media.

Even Leicester star Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall chimed in by sharing the video on his X page.

Midfielder Hamza Choudhury liked a tweet which read: "It's a crazy season when 'the best team' finishes third, hey?"

Other fans wrote: “The best team in the league not even able to win the league. What a mint team. Hope they stay in Championship forever”

“It's a marathon not a sprint mate. You won the battles but we won the war.”

While another fan shared a photo of a Whites shirt printed with ‘Champions 24’ on the back, with a line of crying laughing emojis.

Well, Leeds, there’s always the play-offs, right?
